ARTIST STATEMENT

Cultural beliefs and women’s histories, manifested through traditional customs and symbols, have always interested me. The symbol of the circle recurs in my work. Circles gather you in and hold you safe. They are infinite, with no beginning or end. They are in perpetual motion – dynamic – yet they connote divine providence and security.

I’ve been appreciative of the reverence for Nature and emphasis on circles in Native American spirituality. A circle of prayer bundles tied under a Colorado tree made a lasting impression on me. The circle can represent the sun, moon, and cycles of the seasons, as well as the cycle of death to rebirth. It represents wholeness and completeness.
